Overview
The Annapurna Circuit is widely considered one of the most diverse and spectacular long-distance treks in the world. This classic route circumnavigates the massive Annapurna Range, taking you through a dramatic transition of climates, cultures, and landscapes.
Trek Overview: From Lush Valleys to High Deserts
This specific itinerary captures the very best of the circuit, starting in the emerald forests of the east and crossing into the rain-shadow regions of the west.
- The Journey Begins: Following a drive from Kathmandu, the trek begins in Dharapani. Here, you are immersed in lush, subtropical forests and the roaring Marsyangdi River.
- Cultural Hub of Manang: As you ascend, the landscape transforms into a high-altitude alpine desert. Manang is a vital stop for acclimatization, where you can explore ancient monasteries and witness the stark beauty of the Gangapurna Glacier.
- The Ultimate Challenge: Thorong La Pass: At 5,416m, the Thorong La Pass is the highest point of the trek. It is a physically demanding ascent that rewards trekkers with an unforgettable 360-degree panorama of the Himalayan peaks.
The Descent to lower Mustang and the KaliGandaki
- Jomsom and the Kali Gandaki: After the pass, you descend into the “Forbidden Kingdom” vibes of Lower Mustang. Jomsom is famous for its wind-swept valleys, unique Thakali culture, and world-renowned apples.
- Ghorepani & Poon Hill: The trail then leads into the deep rhododendron forests of Ghorepani. A pre-dawn hike to Poon Hill offers one of the most famous sunrises in Nepal, with views of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna massif glowing in the morning light.
- A Lakeside Finish: The trek concludes in Pokhara, the “City of Lakes,” where you can relax by Phewa Lake and reflect on your journey through the heart of the Himalayas.
Experience & Accessibility
- Ease of Trekking: The route is considered fairly easy for the most part.
- Fitness Level: Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can complete this trek without significant hassle.
Best Seasons: Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November) for stable weather and clear skies.
