What You Need to Know (Kathmandu vs. Ramechhap)

Lukla Flights

Lukla Airport (Tenzing-Hillary Airport) is the main gateway to the Everest region for trekkers and climbers. However, during peak seasons, flights to Lukla operate from Ramechhap Airport (RCH) instead of Kathmandu. This guide explains why, how it affects you, and your alternatives.

Why Flights Move to Ramechhap During Peak Season

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has announced that every year starting 25 March until end of May ( Spring season ) and starting September 25 until end of November (Autumn season ), all scheduled flights to Lukla will be operated from Ramechhap Airport instead of Kathmandu.

Reason Explanation
Avoid Traffic Congestion Kathmandu Airport handles heavy international and domestic traffic. Moving Lukla flights reduces pressure on air traffic control.
Smoother Operations Smaller aircraft flying to Lukla require optimal weather windows. Ramechhap offers more flexible scheduling.
Better Reliability Fewer delays and cancellations mean trekkers reach Lukla on time.

📅 This applies during peak trekking seasons: Autumn (September–November) and Spring (March–May). During off-seasons, flights may resume from Kathmandu.
