Overview
For those seeking a deeper connection with Tibetan Buddhism—beyond the bustling pilgrim trails of central Lhasa—this 5-day journey offers the perfect balance. You will explore the cultural treasures of Lhasa, including the majestic Potala Palace, the sacred Jokhang Temple, and the lively Barkhor Market. But the true highlight awaits on Day 4: a serene excursion to Ganden Monastery, one of Tibet’s three great Gelugpa university monasteries, perched dramatically atop Wangbur Mountain.
This short trip is ideal for travelers who want to experience the spiritual and architectural highlights of Tibet while venturing off the typical tourist path—into the peaceful hills where monks debate philosophy and prayer flags flutter against an endless blue sky.
Trip Highlights
- Potala Palace (UNESCO): The iconic winter residence of the Dalai Lamas – a fortress of golden stupas, ancient scroll paintings, and Buddhist relics
- Jokhang Temple: The spiritual heart of Tibet, where pilgrims prostrate and pray before the most sacred Buddha statue
- Barkhor Square & Market: A living pilgrimage route and bustling bazaar of turquoise jewelry, prayer flags, and Tibetan handicrafts
- Sera Monastery: Famous for its afternoon monk debates and “Court of Wild Roses” atmosphere
- Drepung Monastery: Once the world’s largest monastery, home to 10,000 monks, with sweeping valley views
- Norbulingka: The Dalai Lama’s summer palace – serene gardens, ponds, and pavilions
- Ganden Monastery (4,300m): One of the three great Gelugpa university monasteries, founded by Je Tsongkhapa in 1409 – peaceful, remote, and spiritually potent
- Tibetan Farmer’s Village: Authentic cultural immersion – experience rural Tibetan life firsthand
