A Complete Guide
Why Insurance Is Mandatory
There is a fine line between adventure and blatant risk. Mountaineering and trekking in Nepal carry inherent dangers, and things rarely go exactly according to plan. Weather delays, altitude sickness, injuries, or unforeseen personal circumstances can disrupt even the best-laid trips. That is why travel insurance is not just recommended – it is mandatory.
Climbalaya requires all clients to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers:
- Emergency medical treatment, hospitalization
- Helicopter evacuation (including high-altitude rescue)
- Trip cancellation or postponement
- Lost or stolen luggage
- Theft and other unforeseen events
⚠️ Important: Foreigners cannot purchase insurance from a Nepali insurer. You must buy a policy in your home country before arriving in Nepal.
What Your Insurance Must Cover:
| Coverage Type | Why It’s Essential |
| Helicopter Evacuation | Remote trekking areas are far from hospitals. A helicopter rescue can cost $5,000 – $20,000+ |
| Medical Expenses | Hospitalization and treatment costs can be high, especially if evacuated to Kathmandu or abroad |
| Altitude illness | Ensure your policy covers altitude-related sickness (HAPE, HACE, AMS) |
| Trip Cancellation / Postponement | Covers you if you must cancel due to injury, family emergency, or work commitments |
| Lost or Delayed Luggage | Gear is expensive; airlines and porters are not always liable |
| Theft | Covers personal belongings stolen during your trip |
| Search and Rescue | Some policies only cover helicopter transport, not the manpower (Sherpas, guides) involved in a rescue. Confirm this detail. |
💡 Key Check: Ensure your policy has no altitude limit that would exclude your planned peak. For example, a policy that only covers up to 4,000m is useless for Everest Base Camp (5,364m) or Island Peak (6,189m).
How the Insurance Process Works:
Step
What Happens
1. Before You Go
Purchase a policy in your home country. Submit a copy to Climbalaya before arrival in Kathmandu.
2. During an Emergency
We contact your insurance company for authorization and a guarantee of payment.
3. Rescue Dispatched
Only after receiving final authorization will we dispatch helicopter or ground rescue services.
4. Immediate Evacuation Needed?
In life-threatening emergencies where waiting for authorization is impossible, you (or your emergency contact) must personally bear all upfront costs.
5. Reimbursement
You then file a claim with your insurance company for reimbursement. We will provide necessary documents and invoices to support your claim.

What to Check Before Buying a Policy:
| Question to Ask Your Insurer | Why It Matters |
| Does this policy cover trekking above 4,000m / 5,000m / 6,000m? | Many standard policies exclude high altitudes |
| Does it cover helicopter evacuation from remote mountain areas? | Not all policies include air rescue |
| Does it cover medical expenses related to altitude sickness (HAPE/HACE)? | Altitude illness is common and can require hospitalization |
| Does it cover search and rescue costs (including Sherpa manpower)? | Some policies cover only the helicopter, not the rescue team |
| Does it cover trip cancellation due to family emergency or work? | Protects your financial investment |
| Does it cover lost, delayed, or stolen baggage? | Trekking gear is expensive to replace |
