Overview
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most celebrated short treks in Nepal, offering a perfect introduction to the Annapurna region. Famous for its sunrise views and vibrant rhododendron forests, this trek is an ideal choice for families, first-time trekkers, and those with limited time who still wish to experience the majesty of the Himalayas.
The Trekking Experience
This journey takes you through traditional Gurung and Magar villages, lush terraced farmlands, and ancient forests, culminating in one of the most photographed viewpoints in the world.
- The Sunrise at Poon Hill (3,210m): The highlight of the trek is a pre-dawn hike to the summit of Poon Hill. As the sun rises, it illuminates a massive wall of snow-capped peaks, including Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna I (8,091m), Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Nilgiri.
- Cultural Immersion: Staying in the large village of Ghorepani and the beautiful stone-village of Ghandruk provides a deep look into the local culture and mountain hospitality.
- Floral Beauty: If you trek in the spring, the forests are transformed into a sea of red, pink, and white as the national flower of Nepal—the Rhododendron—comes into full bloom.
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. While there are some steep stone staircases (notably the 3,000+ steps to Ulleri), it is achievable for anyone with a basic level of fitness.
Best Time to Trek
- Spring (March – May): Best for blooming rhododendrons and mild temperatures.
- Autumn (September – November): Offers the clearest skies and the sharpest views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.
- Winter (December – February): Possible and less crowded, though it can be cold at night and may involve some snow on the trail.
