Yoga Instructor

Sumit Singh

For Sumit, yoga is a way of life. For him, yoga represents absolute truth, righteousness, and divine qualities, as well as an attitude towards all of existence. He shares the wisdom of yoga from this perspective: how to make every small act a part of your yoga practice.

Sumit is a long-time trampler of the path of traditional yoga, radiating joy and warmth. He is from Nepal but currently living in Finland with his family. Yoga has been a part of Sumit’s life since childhood in the form of bhakti yoga. The more physical aspects of yoga came later. Sumit has accumulated teaching experience for 12 years from many different countries and cultures.

Sumit’s own practice consists variously of asana, pranayama, mudra and bandhas, meditation, contemplation, spiritual discourse, study of wisdom texts, mantra chanting, devotion to Lord and bhajan & kirtan.

Sumit is warm and smiling, raised in rural Nepal. Sumit was born into a family where bhakti yoga has always been an integral part of everyday life. His father is an accomplished harmonium player and bhajan singer, and spiritual music has been a part of Sumit’s everyday life since childhood.

Sumit became interested in more physical exercises of yoga at the age of 12 while living with his older brother in Janakpur. The practicing was a fun pastime for young Sumit, but it also had a more serious purpose: Nepal’s health care system is not functional, and the farming family, struggling with even basic needs, had nothing extra. Social security is just an utopia in Nepal. At first, Sumit and his brother thought that with the help of yoga they could stay healthy and well, and thus avoid the financial problems that illness would inevitably cause.

The spark for yoga remained and in 2014, Sumit and his brother found teacher training based on traditional Hatha yoga at Bharat Thakur Artistic Yoga in Kathmandu. The intensive full-time training lasted 6 months. After his education, Sumit went to Dubai to teach.

In 2016, Sumit returned to his homeland and continued teaching at the Sooriya Wellness & Yoga Center in Kathmandu. Around the same time, he found a teacher, Vishal Mirsha, under whose close personal teaching he studied until 2020. Such a close student-teacher relationship is not very common these days, although in the yogic tradition this is exactly how yoga has been studied and passed on. Sumit has described this experience as truly opening his eyes to the essence of yoga. At the same time, he found peace and a clear direction for his own spiritual practice and work as a teacher. And for himself a guru, Shree Shivapuri Baba.

Later, Sumit has studied traditional hatha yoga and ashtanga philosophy e.g. at Vivekananda Yoga University in India and RYT 500 h studies at the Himalayan Yoga Academy in Kathmandu. He also names his elder brother Jitendra Singh as one of his important teachers. His brother is very dedicated Sadhaka (yoga practitioner) and teacher.

Sumit as a teacher:

As a teacher, Sumit is sound and thorough, but at the same time gentle, equal and always thinking of the best of the student. Sumit’s asana work is precise and focused. He especially loves to talk about the deeper aspects of yoga. He is always ready to help those who are truely seeking the guidance on the path of yoga.

With his roots in Sanatan Hindu culture, Sumit’s cultural capital in the field of yoga is immense. He is constantly deepening his understanding through his own daily practice and his teachers. In the philosophical questions of yoga, he relies on the teachings of his own and his teacher’s guru, i.e. Shivapuri Baba.

Sumit’s teaching languages are English, Nepali and Hindi. He also speaks and understands Finnish very well.
