Director

Phurba Namgyal Sherpa

A certified NNMGA/UIAGM/IFMGA guide, Phurba Namgyal Sherpa is as passionate about mountains, climbing and trekking as one is about life. Born in the remote Rolwaling Valley at the altitude of 4,200m in the year 1986, he is a second-generation mountaineering guide. Although his parents never wanted him to follow in his father’s footsteps, the stories told by his father of his time in the mountains gravitated him towards the profession.

Since then he has worked with many adventure tourism agencies and successfully summited Mount Everest, Mount Cho-Oyu, Mount Ama Dablam, Mount Baruntse and many other peaks in Nepal.

And in the autumn of 2001 during his school break, despite all attempts to dissuade Phurba
from becoming a guide, Phurba jumped on the opportunity to join a Japanese trekking team as
an assistant guide to Langtang Valley. He followed his first trek with another Japanese team to
the same valley, but this time as an assistance climbing guide or a climbing Sherpa to Yala
Peak (5520m). Phurba was hooked, and there has been no turning back.

Since then he has worked with many adventure tourism agencies and successfully summited
Mount Everest, Mount Cho-Oyu, Mount Ama Dablam, Mount Baruntse and many other peaks in
Nepal. Fluent in German and English language, Phurba has also guided trips in the Alps several
times. His right temperament, dedication and friendly approach to lead and help the climbing
team is admirable. It is a non-negotiable quality in a guide that determines the success of any
trip, and Phurba has got it. Under Phurba’s guidance as the Director, Climbalaya guides carry
the same dedication and passion towards their clients and their job. Phurba’s relentless
contribution makes Climbalaya stand out as a passionate and committed operator of adventure
treks and expeditions.
